We are Greg & Pamela Beckman. Pam is completely in love with pugs (I think it's more of an obsession), and I enjoy playing bagpipes. Go figure. We spend most of our time around each other, but hey, I guess that's what happens when you are each other's other half.
We met in college where we both took a few ceramics classes for our graphic design major. Who doesn't right? Our love for clay began here. During this time, we stumbled upon some amazing images of crystalline glazes. This discovery sparked the beginning of our obsession. We wanted to learn how to create pieces covered with these fascinating crystals. Unfortunately, we were unable to pursue this due to the class structure and the way the kilns were fired. So we temporarily shelved the idea in the back of our minds until we figured out a way and means of creating our own crystalline glazed ceramics.
After college, we married each other and moved up to San Jose. Finally! This was our chance to find a home of our own with a space specifically dedicated to our hobby. The opportunity to start exploring and learning how to grow these crystals was now right in front of us! We started to build our very own pottery studio, beginning with just a wheel and a kiln.
Things started off slowly due to the long, demanding hours at our day jobs. How else were we supposed to pay for this unique and complex hobby, right? The only time we were able to work in our studio was late at night. Many times we'd be out there waaay past midnight under a portable heater, throwing on the wheel or mixing chemicals for our glazes (we make all of our glazes from scratch). If you saw our eyes, you'd tell us that we're crazy and that we should go to bed! As a matter of fact, it's really still like that to this day!
We're both in this together, collaborative artists. Even though we each create our own pieces, whether handbuilt or on the wheel, almost all of our pieces are touched by both of us. We create the glazes together, and apply the glazes together. One of us may have thrown the piece, but the other may have made and applied the glaze on it. You get the picture.
If you’ve been checking out crystalline pottery, you’ve probably heard that it's a difficult, precise, and fickle process. It's all true. There are many times where we open the kiln like it's Christmas Day only to discover failed glaze results. That's the challenge of crystalline glazes that never goes away, not even with many years of experience. It actually motivates and pushes us to experiment further with these chemicals and firing schedules. So, like life, we get back up and try again. Who was it again who said, "Life is like a box of chocolates"? Oh ya, him. In some ways, our kiln is that box...except, we don't eat our pieces.
So there you go, that's the exciting start of our great venture into the crystalline world and it has been solely crystalline for us from then on. Since then, our studio has been constantly expanding and so has our love for clay and these amazing glazes. We hope you share in our excitement in owning a one-of-a-kind handmade crystalline piece!
Thanks for checking us out,
Greg & Pam
